At 316 pages, John Kilroy’s first book of poems, “Torque,” is an aggressive beast of a book.
One reviewer wrote, “Kilroy’s poetic planet turns on, as the title suggests, speed and energy…collectively Kilroy is convincing in his evocation of a poetic consciousness in full motion, a mind leaving its mark like the jet in “Rest” that “urges the sky / to make way, insistent sound / of scarring, this noise of purpose.”
We asked Kilroy to help us out in describing “Torque,” but what he said was a bit incomprehensible. “I used to be able to explain it. Now, I don’t know for sure. I originally pictured “Torque” blowing the reader up. Now, I don’t know. Maybe, there’s all the little shields we build and put up in our defense to find a way through this culture that we live in. Each shield is 3 inches high by 2 or 2 1/2 inches wide. By the time you reach your late 20s, you probably have 300 little shields. But, the shields actually don’t protect you. They brick you over. “Torque” blows apart the shields. After “Torque,” you are finally open to enchantment of a different kind. “Torque” makes you available to the spell.”
And if we tried to describe the writing in “Torque.” we would reduce it terribly. So, let’s just say this . . . Western civilization is in full atrophy. “Torque” is for seekers, and answers the question, Is it possible? Well, “Torque” is impossible, but you can get both hands on it!
The second edition book is actually three books of poetry in the one volume: “Last Casino Page,” “Monkey In the Cadillac” and “I Wrench The Paradise.”
